Blood Transfusions
RISKS
About 1 in 2 million donations might carry HIV and transmit HIV if given to a patient. Risk of contracting hepatitis B is about 1 in 205,000. The risk for hepatitis C is 1 in 2 million. There is a possible risk of getting vCJD from a blood transfusion. (2)
Retrospective study of 750,937 patients in which 6.3% of those received at least 1 perioperative RBC transfusion showed transfusion associated w/ higher odds ratio of DVT (aOR 2.1) and PE (aOR 1.9) with the more transfussions associated with increased odds of VTE. (1)
